Many enthusiasts focus solely on how cool bongs look in photos, but they forget that the functional connection between the piece and its accessories is what actually makes the session work. Understanding the "sex" and the "size" of your glass ensures that every bowl, nail, or ashcatcher fits perfectly with a high-quality airtight seal. Understanding Joint Gender: Male vs. Female The first thing you need to identify is whether your connection is male or female. This is a straightforward concept: joints only fit together if they have opposite ends. Female Joints: These are the wide openings that receive an accessory. Most standard glass bongs feature a female joint where the downstem or bowl is inserted. Male Joints: These are the tapered ends that slide into a female opening. You will most commonly see these on bong bowls, slides, and certain types of traditional nails. If you have a female joint on your water pipe, you must buy a male accessory to fit inside it. If you are using dab rigs that have a male joint sticking out, you will need a female banger or nail to slide over the top. How to Use a Dab Rig (The Ritual) Mastering the ritual requires precise timing and temperature control. High temperatures scorch flavor compounds, while insufficient heat fails to vaporize the oil. Follow this standard low-temp method to ensure the next sesh is smooth. Heat: Aim the butane torch flame directly at the bottom of the quartz banger. Apply heat evenly for 30–45 seconds until a faint orange glow appears. Cool: Wait 45–60 seconds for the banger to cool. Ensure a surface temperature of 450°F–550°F for vaporization rather than combustion. Dose & Cap: Place a rice-sized amount of concentrate into the center of the bucket.
